What is Geocoding?

Geocoding is the computational process of transforming a text-based description of a location — such as a pair of coordinates, an address, or a name of a place — to a location on the Earth's surface. The resulting location is output in a standard format, universally as a pair of Latitude and Longitude coordinates in the WGS84 system.

How to Find Coordinates on Google Maps

If you only need to find a single coordinate quickly, your smartphone map is highly capable:

  1. Open Google Maps on your computer or phone.
  2. Search for the address you want.
  3. On Desktop: Right-click the red pin. A menu will appear with the Latitude and Longitude at the very top. Clicking it copies it to your clipboard.
  4. On Mobile: Drop a pin by long-pressing on the map. Scroll down in the information pane to see the coordinate pair.

Reverse Geocoding (Coordinates to Address)

The opposite action is reverse geocoding. If a surveyor provides you with a coordinate like 38.8977, -77.0365, reverse geocoding translates that point into "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC". Note that if a coordinate is in the middle of a desert, a reverse geocoder will usually just return the closest recognized jurisdiction or simply fail.

Warning: Verify Your Calculation

Coordinate accuracy varies by device and datum. Do not use these results for legal or construction purposes without checking:

Datum Shift Risk

Using the wrong coordinate system (e.g. WGS84 vs NAD83) creates a permanent 1-meter offset.
