How UTM Zones Work

The UTM system divides the Earth into 60 zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide. Zone 1 starts at 180 W and zones count eastward. Each zone uses a Transverse Mercator projection centered on its central meridian, which keeps distortion low within the zone.

UTM Band Letters

The latitude band letter (C through X, skipping I and O) identifies the 8-degree latitude band. For example, zone "18T" means UTM zone 18 in the latitude band between 32 N and 40 N.

Common mistake: Do not confuse UTM band letters with MGRS grid square letters. UTM bands are 8 degrees tall; MGRS grid squares are 100km squares within a UTM zone.
