What is a Geohash?

Spatial Indexing System

Invented in 2008 by Gustavo Niemeyer, Geohash is a public domain geographic geocode system which encodes a geographic location into a short string of letters and digits (Base32). It is widely used by databases such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, and Redis for spatial indexing and rapid proximity searches.

Precision by Length

A key feature of Geohash is its adjustable precision. A 1-character Geohash covers a massive 5,000km x 5,000km area, while a 9-character Geohash pinpoints a location down to roughly 4.7m x 4.7m. Because nearby locations often share similar prefixes, simple string-prefix matching can be used for incredibly fast "find near me" queries in large datasets.
