Whether you are transitioning from GPS to military maps or surveying plans, converting coordinates doesn't have to be hard.
If you already have a coordinate and just need to convert it, you don't need to do the math yourself. Use our free, instant calculator.

Convert Coordinates in Seconds (No Setup Needed)You have a paper map, a military radio, and an iPhone. They all show your location using a completely different format. Converting coordinates correctly is the only way to get them to sync up.
Different industries use different mapping systems. GPS devices use Decimal Degrees. Older maps use Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS). Surveyors and hikers use UTM. The military uses MGRS. To plot a military coordinate on Google Maps, you must mathematically convert it from one format to another.
While you can convert DMS to Decimals using simple division, converting Lat/Long to UTM requires complex elliptical trigonometry based on the shape of the Earth (the WGS84 ellipsoid). A tiny math error on paper can mean digging a pipeline 50 feet away from where it belongs.
If you have the coordinate 40 42' 46", here is how you convert it to a modern computer format:
Convert between any format instantly and safely.
Google Maps search uses Decimal Degrees (e.g., 40.7128, -74.0060). If you have UTM or DMS coordinates, you must convert them to Decimal Degrees first.
If you have a spreadsheet of thousands of coordinates, do not convert them one by one. You can use a batch processing tool to upload a CSV file and convert them all instantly.
Coordinate accuracy varies by device and datum. Do not use these results for legal or construction purposes without checking:
GPS Accuracy Alert
Your phone's GPS can be off by 30 meters. This can cause critical errors in your data.

Using the wrong coordinate system (e.g. WGS84 vs NAD83) creates a permanent 1-meter offset.
