Format: 40.7128, -74.0060
Best for: Google Maps, API integrations, and simple sharing.
Format: 40 42' 46.08" N, 74 0' 21.6" W
Best for: Traditional maps, nautical navigation, and official property deeds.
To convert manually: Divide the minutes by 60, and the seconds by 3600. Add those numbers to the degrees. (e.g., 40 30' 0" = 40 + 0.5 = 40.5). South and West coordinates become negative.
The most common mistake is forgetting the negative sign for West Longitude (e.g., North America) or South Latitude. If you swap Latitude and Longitude, your point will also end up in unexpected locations (often the ocean near Africa).
